My Heritage Book: It's a super fun, educational, award-winning, and personalized children's book that celebrates your child's heritage. It takes families on a wonderful journey into their pasts, while exploring their origins. It's a true gift to genealogy that should be in every home, so young people can find out truly who they are and where they came from, while bonding with those they love.

I’m always looking for new ways to share my years of genealogy research with my family members and in ways that don’t bore them or many them run the other way. And what do you do about the younger generation in your family? In school I’m sure they learn about history – both national and local – but wouldn’t it be easier to understand if they could learn about their own ancestors related to historical events?

Recently at RootsTech I spent some time with author Deanna Bufo Novak of kidsHeritage and she has come up with a great way to share family history with children: through the customizable My Heritage Book, a personalized children’s book based on the countries of ancestry.  After talking with Deanna and looking at the samples she had available, I decided to place an order for a My Heritage Book for my cousin Lilli who lives in New York. She’s seven years old, smart as a whip, and loves to read. I thought, “What a great way for me to help her understand where she comes from and other aspects of her family history.”

Not Just a Book – a Keepsake

The ordering process was easy using the online form at kidsHeritage. I was asked a series of questions such as the child’s first name, last name, birth date, the names of up to eight countries related to the child’s heritage, etc. I was also able to add a personalized message as part of giving the book as a gift for a special occasion. Payment was easy and I was done in less than 10 minutes with the order.

I was pretty impressed with the book when it arrived within just one week of ordering. This is a SUBSTANTIAL book! It is well made, the binding is sturdy (it has to hold up to lots of usage, right?) and the art work is beautiful. I’ve seen other personalized children’s books before and to me they always seemed “stilted” and just weren’t easy to read. I actually took the time to read the entire book and believe it or not learned some things about customs from my own heritage countries like Germany and Ireland.

Next, I sent the book on to my cousin in New York since it had been customized for her daughter Lilli. And the reaction? They both LOVED IT! Look at the photo below and you’ll see Lilli enjoying her new My Heritage Book.

Features of My Heritage Book

Besides being able to create a customized story about Lilli’s heritage along with information on four different countries, I really liked this feature: a family tree that Lilli can complete by hand with the help of her family. In addition, there is space where information about family traditions can be entered – a great way of documenting and preserving this information for future generations.

There are over 90 countries to choose from when customizing My Heritage Book and the base price allows up to four different countries. You can add up to eight countries total with each additional country for $5.00 each.

Conclusion

One of the biggest challenges that I hear from genealogists and family historians is this: how to get the younger generation interested in their own family history. I strongly believe that it has to start early and using My Heritage Book is an excellent way to accomplish this. Passing on your genealogy research in a customized children’s book could set that child on a lifelong path of exploration of their own family history.

About The Author: Deanna Bufo Novak

Deanna Bufo Novak is the author of My Heritage Book and founder of its publisher, kidsHeritage, Inc. Her idea for this unique children’s book started in early 2004, shortly after the birth of her daughter. After a year and a half of active development, she launched this very special personalized children’s book.

Originally from New York, Deanna received a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications (Journalism and Sociology majors) from the University of Miami in 1996. She received her Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Nova Southeastern University, where she served as Articles Editor on the Law Review. While completing her LL.M., Deanna began working as an associate for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Miami, where she later advanced to senior associate. She and a colleague then opened a general law practice, where she concentrated on tax and corporate law and served as the office manager. Beginning in 2004, Deanna performed contract work for various law firms and accounting firms, providing her the flexibility to spend time with her daughter and follow her dream of creating My Heritage Book.

Deanna is an active fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and has served on the committee for its signature event, Relay for Life, for the past four years. She enjoys spending her free time with her husband, Scott, and children, Samantha and Nicholas. When she is not spending time with her family, Deanna enjoys traveling, reading, and writing.
